HOW SAFEGUARDING TRAINING CAN HELP YOU IN YOUR ROLE

Safeguarding and protecting children and young people from harm is the responsibility of every member of staff within an organisation. This blog will cover the benefits of safeguarding training and how that training will help you protect the children and young people in your care whatever your role.

WHAT IS SAFEGUARDING?

Safeguarding involves protecting children and young people from abuse and/or maltreatment, preventing harm to their health or development, ensuring they grow up with the provision of safe and effective care and taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcomes.

AN ENTIRE ORGANISATION RESPONSIBILITY

Safeguarding is essential for all organisations, including those in the education sector, a school or college will have a designated safeguarding lead (DSL) or designated safeguarding person (DSP), but it is vital that every member of the organisation understands the importance of safeguarding and the policies and practices that are embedded into the culture of the organisation.

Effective safeguarding prevents harm to children and young people, allowing organisations to intervene and prevent issues from escalating. It also provides robust evidence which can support child protection enquiries, a criminal case or even any type of review.

Safeguarding is the responsibility of each and every member of staff thus it is important all members of staff have up to date safeguarding training. Without proper safeguarding processes in place, children and young people may face serious risks with serious, long-term implications.

WHY TRAINING IS IMPORTANT

It is essential for school staff to have up-to-date, reliable safeguarding training in order to support them in keeping students safe from harm. Safeguarding Leads are required to update this training at least every two years and other school staff should receive safeguarding updates at least annually.

Safeguarding Leads/Persons

We have a range of different training options for DSL’s and DSP’s alike, whether you are new to the role, need a refresher or want more advanced training to enhance your skillset.

DSL Training - Safeguarding Children in England; a practical approach and/or DSP Training - Safeguarding Children in Wales; a practical approach

These courses are aimed at newly appointed Designated Safeguarding Leads/ Designated Safeguarding Persons or those wishing to revisit the foundations of their role and responsibilities. You will gain the everyday skills to confidently protect the children you work with and identify additional measures your establishment can take to strengthen its safeguarding culture.

Designated Safeguarding Lead Refresher Training; a practical approach

Aimed at Safeguarding Leads who have previously attended a full Designated Role course and require an update to their knowledge and skills.

Advanced Safeguarding; strengthen your practice

If you are a more experienced Safeguarding Lead looking to build on existing knowledge and practices, then this course is for you. We will cover new legislation and guidance key to the safeguarding role and offer up advice in reviewing your policies and procedures. We also look at the child protection process in detail.

Safeguarding Children in International Schools; a practical approach

Aimed at Designated Child Protection Leads providing you with the practical everyday skills to confidently protect the children you work with. By understanding the responsibilities of your role, you will be equipped to competently make decisions, take appropriate action, and accurately record your responses to child protection concerns.

Governors – A strategic approach to Safeguarding Children in England

For schools governors, the training will strengthen your safeguarding knowledge of safeguarding issues and give you the skills to develop your competence and confidence to carry out your role to create a safer culture within your establishment.

Safer Recruitment in England; creating a safer culture

Safer recruitment is a vital first step in safeguarding to prevent unsuitable individuals from working with children and young people. All individuals involved in the recruitment process should consider this course as it will show you the foundation of creating a safe environment and culture for children and young people to thrive in. You will gain vital skills in identifying, deterring, or rejecting individuals who pose a risk of harm and an understanding of your statutory responsibilities incorporating the recommendations.

All Teaching Staff

These courses are aimed at staff in a variety of roles from teaching staff to volunteers. We stress that anyone who comes in contact with children or young people should have safeguarding training.

Safeguarding Children in England - The 4R's; Recognise, Respond, Report and Record and/or Safeguarding Children in Wales - The 4R's; Recognise, Respond, Report and Record

These courses are aimed at all staff, including support staff and volunteers, working or coming into contact with children. Establishing the foundations of safeguarding children, you will gain the necessary skills to confidently protect the children within your establishment and demonstrate the appropriate response to your concerns.

Prevent Duty in Education – your role within the Prevent Strategy

All staff working within an educational setting have a duty, as specified under section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, to identify vulnerable children and prevent them from being drawn into terrorism. This course will equip you with the necessary understanding of your duty, the risk to children and provide you with relevant resources and support to fulfil your role and protect those exposed to extremism.
